iPhone XS (correctly pronounced iPhone 10s) was iPhone’s flagship of the year when it was launched in 2019. However, it was launched with a lower model and a higher model; iPhone XR and iPhone XS Max. Its launch price differs based on its variants which were based on their memory space. It was $999 for the 64GB variant, $1,149 for the 256GB variant and $1,349 for the 512GB, which is an equivalent of ₦359,640, ₦413,640 and ₦485,640 respectively. But upon the incitement of exchange and tax rates, it was said to be up to ₦445,000, ₦479,000 and ₦600,000 in Nigeria for the respective variants.
iPhone XS was officially discontinued by Apple in September 2019 after iPhone 11 and its models. This was a marketing strategy not to leave their customers a room to choose. However, it’s still very much available for sale in Nigeria in many retail outlets for the UK/fairly used versions and even new ones. iPhone XS price in Nigeria has, however, reduced a lot when compared to its launch price.
iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X (launched September 2017)
iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro Max (launched September 2019)
iPhone XS, when compared to iPhone X, has a similar feature at a glance. You almost couldn’t tell the difference until you access the internal features. Most of the features still sit at the same spot, however, some upgrades were made such as its ability to scratch easily.
iPhone XS came with a slim bezel around the side which gives a sleek feeling when held. It also has a rectangular notch on the front that houses the TrueDepth camera system, speakers, and sensors. But has no home button nor a touch ID fingerprint sensor.
Like its predecessor, it has rounded corners made seven-layer ink process. It also sports a folded circuit stacking technology along with subpixel anti-aliasing so as to have distortion-free edges.
On the left side sits the silent switch and the volume rockers, while the right side houses the microSD and the nano-SIM tray and also the power button. The top side has nothing on it. The bottom part has two speakers with the lightning bolt charge port in-between.
The backside has a slightly protruding dual-camera which are horizontally aligned. In the middle of the cameras lies the quad-LED flash and a microphone.
iPhone XS sports a 5.8-inch Super Retina OLED HDR display. It features a 2436 x 1125 resolution with 458 ppi. The phone has a dimension of 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7 mm and weighs 177 grams — a little heavier than iPhone X.
It offers an IP68 rating which implies it is dust resistant and can resist water up to 2 meters for about 30 minutes. Its screen-to-body ratio is 82.9% while its aspect ratio is 19.5:9
The back of the phone features a sophisticated glass that makes the wireless charging ability possible, just like it is for iPhone X.
The silver Apple logo and iPhone lettering are located at the top half and the bottom half of the back, respectively.
Camera and Face ID
The selfie TrueDepth camera sports 7MP with f/1.8 aperture which makes the Face ID possible via infrared.
The iPhone XS sports a dual-lens camera of 12MP each on the rear but with a different aperture of f/1.8 and f/2.4 (a wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens, respectively). They both have optical image stabilization and wide colour means a better image quality.
iPhone XS uses Face ID just like the iPhone X. However, it unlocks your phone by about 30% faster. While creating a facial scan, the dot projector directs about 30,000 invisible infrared dots from the infrared camera. Hence, it can detect the owner’s face in a seemingly changed facial look — like using sunshades or scarfs.
iPhone X sports a non-removable, Li-ion battery of 2,658mAh which lasted 30 minutes longer than iPhone X.
It serves up to 20 hours of talk time and 60 hours of audio playback, 14 hours of video playback and 12 hours of internet usage.
Its fast charging ability supports the USB-C which charges up to 50% in 30 minutes. It supports Qi wireless charging due to its glass body and in-built wireless charging coils. However, the wireless charger is not included in the pack of the phone.
Memory and Connectivity
iPhone XS has a 4GB RAM for all its variants with differences in internal memory; 64GB, 256GB and 512GB. If you are into phone and video photography or loves the 4K recording, then you’d want to settle for the 256GB or 512GB variant.
iPhone XS supports 4G LTE (with download speed up to 1 Gbps), 3G and GSM/EDGE. It also supports WiFi (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac), Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot, and Bluetooth v5.0 with A2DP.
Hardware and Software
iPhone XS was launched with iOS 12. However, following an announcement made in June 2019, it was upgraded to iOS 13.3 on the 10th of December, 2019.
The A12 Bionic chip with built-in Neural Engine enables it to perform faster and allows some upgraded features. This is what supports the faster Face ID detection, enhanced gaming experience and the production of more detailed images.
iPhone XS was launched in Silver, Space Gray, and Gold. It was said that the Space Gray and Gold took advanced processing to enhance the richness of the stainless steel bands and to increase its reflectivity.
